Inside One Of the Biggest Colombian Emerald Mines

In the western mountains of Boyaca, Colombia, through a process that has taken millions of years, nature has created a masterpiece in the mines of Cunas. There, the Magnificent Green Emeralds, the most beautiful stones of the country are born.

The Cunas mine was discovered by hunters 25 years ago. While resting on the top of the mountain, they notice tiny glimmering fragments of emeralds amongst the shale and limestone. When they showed them to local companies, they realized these emeralds were different, with a very special color.

Since then, the company Santa Rosa Emeralds began the exploration and extraction of the stones, generating admiration from buyers and instant recognition on the international market.

Three generations of the same family have since dedicated their lives to the progress and evolution of the specialized mining of these stones. Over time they have developed quality standards to guarantee the stone’s purity while maintaining environmentally sustainable and responsible mining.

Cunas has worked with the community, employing hundreds of local residents who have grown with the industry, making its product one of the most important exports of the country.

The name Magnificent Green, given to the exact tone of the Cunas emeralds, is inspired in the Magnificus Bird, a bird-of-paradise species, originally from Papua New Guinea, that exhibits this iridescent green in its chest when courting the female with its unique dance.
